How to estimate concrete block and mortar for a wall

· 3 min read

Good estimates keep a masonry job moving. Start with wall area, then work out block, mortar and an allowance for waste.

Start with wall area

Multiply wall length by height and subtract openings for doors and windows. A standard 8 × 8 × 16 inch block covers roughly 0.89 square feet, or about 1.125 blocks per square foot.

Mortar and waste

Mortar needs vary with joint size and block type, so confirm coverage on the bag. Add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.

  • Measure wall area
  • Subtract openings
  • Add waste for cuts and breakage
